As a Berkeley professor, I see the impact H-1B visas and AI have on students' job opportunities

FOX News

The H-1B visa program was intended to bring in specialized talent from abroad, but instead it has become a tool for employers to hire lower-cost labor for ordinary jobs. The result is a distorted job market, where highly skilled workers are being squeezed out of the H-1B visa program by spam applications for ordinary workers who then take entry-level positions that are already in short supply. This misuse of H-1B visas has a negative synergy with growing impact of AI on the job market and is part of a larger problem that urgently needs attention. The impact of this visa-farming problem is particularly acute among young people and recent college graduates, who face a bleak job market despite moderate overall unemployment rates. According to government data, the ratio of unemployment for college grads under 25 to those over 25 has hit an all-time high of more than four to one.

JobRecoGPT -- Explainable job recommendations using LLMs

Ghosh, Preetam, Sadaphal, Vaishali

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In today's rapidly evolving job market, finding the right opportunity can be a daunting challenge. With advancements in the field of AI, computers can now recommend suitable jobs to candidates. However, the task of recommending jobs is not same as recommending movies to viewers. Apart from must-have criteria, like skills and experience, there are many subtle aspects to a job which can decide if it is a good fit or not for a given candidate. Traditional approaches can capture the quantifiable aspects of jobs and candidates, but a substantial portion of the data that is present in unstructured form in the job descriptions and resumes is lost in the process of conversion to structured format. As of late, Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken over the AI field by storm with extraordinary performance in fields where text-based data is available. Inspired by the superior performance of LLMs, we leverage their capability to understand natural language for capturing the information that was previously getting lost during the conversion of unstructured data to structured form. To this end, we compare performance of four different approaches for job recommendations namely, (i) Content based deterministic, (ii) LLM guided, (iii) LLM unguided, and (iv) Hybrid. In this study, we present advantages and limitations of each method and evaluate their performance in terms of time requirements.

With the growing use of innovative technologies in the health care sector, global telemedicine market value is set to increase substantially. The concept of remote patient monitoring is gaining traction broadly among medical professionals and patients alike due to the convenience it offers for diagnosis and treatment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant uptake in the demand for telemedicine solutions caused by patient cancellations of in-person appointments during the rapid spread of the virus. Across the world, hospitals and clinics switched to videoconferencing for appointments to discuss diagnosis and treatment options with patients for non-critical cases. From deep tech to high finance, why Leeds is luring companies north

#artificialintelligence

Move to Leeds and benefit from the jobs boom, says Melissa Berthelot, boss of medical appliance maker WarnerPatch, who relocated her business from London two years ago to benefit from a burgeoning deep tech industry in the West Yorkshire city. With skilled data science and software engineers in short supply across the south-east – and most other parts of the country – Leeds has proved a happy hunting ground for Berthelot, an engineer turned chief executive who used the first lockdown to make the jump north. Deep tech refers to sectors including artificial intelligence, robotics and bio-technologies. Its Blade Runner-like image may seem worlds away from the Emmerdale village tour on offer just west of town, but Leeds is managing to straddle old and new as it jumps up the UK rankings for job creation and productivity. The city has gained a reputation for developing the skilled staff and financial muscle needed to fund startups and innovation, especially in healthcare, but also in the city's more traditional areas of expertise – financial and legal services, manufacturing and retail.
